X-Rite photo

Francesco De Marco

• When did you first understand the importance of color to the photographic process?
I understood the importance of color in the photographic process from the moment I started printing my photographs and noticed that small shades of color did not reflect what I really wanted.

• What is the most important aspect of color management that an aspiring photographer should know?
Every aspiring photographer must know that the colors we see through the human eye must be the same and improved in photography and in the work process. It is therefore necessary to use professional tools to give due importance to what we have photographed.

• Give an example of the ways in which a solid knowledge of color management (or an accurate color environment) helped you – on a project? In a consultancy situation?
As a nature photographer, I always need my photography to be perfectly represented in colors, shades and brightness. Especially when I have to advertise some articles, make prints for some events and make themed photo shows.

• Why are you committed to using X-Rite products?
Because they are the only products that the professional needs to have a real and perfect work platform in colors. Because X-Rite I think is the essential and fundamental tool for those who need quality.

• How important are the latest color management tools in today’s industry? Why?
Color management is very important, especially in my field of naturalsite photographer because now you can see online photos so much altered with post production programs that the colors are really very altered. I think that proper color management can make the observer understand the difference between real and unreal photographs. That can help distinguish the beauty of photography from the many other photographs found online.

• What does the (near) future hold for the photo industry, in your opinion? Do you think color management will be more or less important – why?
Color management will be increasingly important because despite the fact that we live in an era in which unreal colors can be created with modern retouching tools, excellent for the IT and social worlds, there is still a desire to see photographs with colors real and printed. I think that a beautiful photograph, printed, that captures the beauty of a sunbeam or some particular moment of some rare animal, if it were to be printed with wrong colors it would lose its importance. The beautiful photographs must and must always be realized through the use of professional tools for color management.

• Do you think color management will be more or less important? Why?
It will be increasingly important because to get quality photographs you need to have color management. This is because a photographic exhibition, with beautiful photographs, always has that more importance than a photograph seen on a mobile phone.

• How is color management related to your artistic process?
In my work I necessarily need quality photographs, where the colors are as real as possible and can really tell what I see with my eyes. Without artifacts or without alterations, I always tend to make photographs as pure and pleasing to the observer as possible. Color control is essential to ensure that every person, whether through a print or via the web, can enjoy photography in all its beauty.

• Do you see color management as an advantage for saving money?
Absolutely, many think that the more expensive the screens, the better the image quality. Very wrong thing, each monitor if calibrated well, realizes excellent quality.
