* When did you first understand the importance of color to the photographic process?
Well, very early! When I started to work with computers and cameras at the beginning of my digital photography, it became more and more clear to me that there are enormous differences between the photo and the representation of the picture shown on the computer. At that time, however, the subject of calibration was way too far away for me personally and not really accessible. But thanks to modern technology, color management is understandable for everyone, no matter how much previous knowledge you have, and everyone can easily get involved in this wide-ranging topic of photography.
* What is the most important aspect of color management that an aspiring photographer should know?
Adjusting the monitor according to your own gut feeling or by estimating your own colour perception is not enough. From capturing the image in the camera, to displaying it on the monitor, through to printing, you need consistent color reproduction, which can only be achieved with professional calibration devices and color tools. Only if my monitor and printer have been properly profiled and calibrated I am able to offer my customers the highest standard in my work.
* Give an example of the ways in which a solid knowledge of color management (or an accurate color environment) helped you – on a project? In a consultancy situation?
As I am often touring in fashion and reportage photography, I have a demand on myself to reproduce colours exactly corresponding to the original counterpart in reality. Whether colorful make-up, fancy clothes, or the right colors of products, interior and much more - my images have to reflect reality and so they do. Since I work closely with Olympus and Illford, I also have the highest standards of true-to-original colours in the areas of printing and picture presentation. And I can only achieve this with my professional colour management solutions from X-Rite.

I think with every new camera, with every new monitor and with the ever-increasing resolutions and megapixels, the topic of color management is becoming more and more important - in any field. High-quality printers and plotters are becoming more and more affordable and only with a correctly profiled and calibrated working environment I can guarantee perfect colours in my work.

Color management is and will always remain extremely important. In general, it will become easier to use the devices, tools and software in the future; both for beginners and for professionals.
* How is color management related to your artistic process?
I can fully trust the presentation of my pictures and shots displayed on my monitors and thus ensure that my photos remain in the viewer's memory, true to colour and reality.

Absolutely - no question! We spend so much money on cameras, lenses, computers and other accessories. In relation to this the products of X-Rite can be affordably bought and help to save a lot of money by avoiding unnecessary misprints and most of all time - time that I have more for my customers.
