When did you first understand the importance of color to the photographic process?

As my images are so colorful I´ve always had it on my mind. But it was when I first started publishing and seeing my images as part of a bigger structure (a magazine or a campaign) that I realized the importance of a standarized color management.

What is the most important aspect of color management that an aspiring photographer should know?

It is very important to make sure that what you are seeing in your image is the same that others will see and it is how it will be reproduced.

Give an example of the ways in which a solid knowledge of color management (or an accurate color environment) helped you – on a project? In a consultancy situation?

Everytime I take time in selecting colors for backgrounds, props, and lighting for a quality color reproduction of the products I have to shoot I´m aware of the importance color management has in the final result.

How important are the latest color management tools in today’s industry?  Why?

As digital imaging has advanced, so has color management and now it is more integrated in the rest of the workflow counting on processing software and it´s different options to make it simpler at every stage.

What does the (near) future hold for the photo industry, in your opinion? Do you think color management will be more or less important – why?

Color management will be as important as it is now, which is VERY important. We will have better and more sophisticated tools, but the most important part will be that everyone involved in the process has to be conscious of the importance of color management. If just one piece of the system fails, all the previous effort will have no purpose. Color management should be important from the beginning of the process to the end of it.

How is color management related to your artistic process?

Color is one of my main tools. I use color in a very graphic way, like a designer does, and it´s part of my creative approach as I use it to create meaning. I usually work on a color palette for every project from the beginning and it is as important as composition or light. This means I need to take very good care that the selected colors are reproduced perfectly and I have to have it in mind for both, RGB and CMYK files.

Do you see color management as an advantage for saving money?

At the end it is. If you spend time and money using precise equipment and caring about the details to achieve máximum quality images a poor color management resulting in a poor color reproduction means all the previous effort was useless.
